ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), established in 1949, is a multi-campus, residential, teaching, and research-led institution located in the picturesque province of KwaZulu-Natal.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has five campuses located in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. As an institution of higher learning, it is committed to academic excellence, innovative research, and critical engagement with society. UKZN has an international reputation for academic excellence and outstanding research output.
Step 1: Complete application forms and submit them accordingly. Each application form below will have instructions.
- First-time applicants will need to apply through the Central Applications Office – CAO.

The university offers a wide variety of under- and post-graduate qualifications that fit into the following faculties:

UKZN APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Certified copy of your ID/passport.
- Certified copy of your National Senior/Matric Certificate or O/A Levels or relevant school leaving qualification/certificate.
- Proof from Universities South Africa (previously known as HESA), that you qualify for admission to degree studies at South Africa universities if you are an international applicant. For more information, refer to the undergraduate prospectus
- Certified copies of your degree certificate(s), academic record, and certificate of conduct, if you attended other universities.
- Proof of English proficiency for international applicants from non-English speaking countries.
- South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluations if the previous qualification(s) was/were obtained at foreign universities (outside South Africa).
- A research proposal/proposed title of the dissertation/thesis if you are applying for a Masters’s Degree or PhD.
- A valid study visa to study in SA if you are an international applicant.
- Before applying online please make sure that you have read the guidelines above.
- Please ensure that you have the USAF/SAQA documents to be uploaded in order to complete your application.
- Please ensure to use reference APPN (followed by your student number) when making the application fee payment.
- Please allow the system 24 hrs to 48 hrs to clear your payment.

UKZN UNDERGRADUATE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate programmes
1. National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate
1.1 Applicants to undergraduate degree programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Degree Studies (NSC-Deg) or a Senior Certificate with endorsement.
1.2 Applicants to undergraduate diploma programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Diploma studies (NSC-Dip) or Senior Certificate.
2. Medium of Instruction
The medium of instruction at UKZN is English, and UKZN requires a pass in English (Home Language or First Additional Language (FAL)) at Level 4 (50% or above) but note that the College of Law requires a pass in English Home Language at Level 5 or English as FAL on Level 6. For admission to Diplomas or Alternative Access programmes a lower performance in English may be acceptable. In the Senior Certificate, a pass for English at First or Second Language HG E is required.
3. Life Orientation
UKZN degree programmes require a pass in Life orientation at Level 4.
UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL (UKZN) UNDERGRADUATE INTERNATIONAL ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
International applicants are subject to a selection procedure based on academic merit and the number of spaces available. An applicant with non-South African school-leaving certificates must contact the South African Matriculation Board directly to determine if they qualify for admission to degree studies in South Africa. International applicants may qualify for an exemption through AEB or Cambridge examinations if they have two A-levels (‘A’ – ‘E’) and three O-level passes (‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’) or equivalent. However, certain subject groupings are also required. It is not sufficient to pass O-levels only.
Please note that Colleges may have a subject, level, and minimum performance (in O and A levels) requirements for admission to their programs. Please ensure that you have your original documents available at registration and arrange for official translations where applicable

UKZN POSTGRADUATE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
UKZN Postgraduate Diplomas (NQF 8)
Requirements
- An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
- Admission to the status of that degree in terms of Rule GR7 (a) OR
- Attained a level of competence as defined by rule GR7 (b)
- A School/College may prescribe further criteria for admission to study. Consult College Handbooks on www.ukzn.ac.za.
- Some Schools/Colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.
Duration
- A minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Except with the permission of the Senate all modules shall be completed at the University.

University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) ACCOMMODATION FOR STUDENTS
Edgewood
Residence accommodation is available on the Edgewood campus. Both catering and self-catering options are available. A total of 631 students are housed in 11 residences on campus. Men and women are housed separately and 55% of the residents are female. Double as well as single rooms are available. Some residences offer self-catering facilities. All residences have access control doors. An additional five flats housing five students each are available for post-graduate students.
On-Campus Residences
The University residences for Howard College and Medical School in Durban accommodate approximately 2162 students. Competition for places is keen and it is not possible to accept all applicants. Residences are grouped into two halls, namely Charles Smith Hall and Albert Luthuli Hall. Charles Smith Hall is comprised of 12 individual residences close to the main academic buildings, banks, shops and Medical School. Albert Luthuli Hall is comprised of the Cluster Residence and the six-story Tower Residence. Situated on the western side of the Howard College campus, this complex is furthest from the academic buildings, but close to most sports fields and the Old Mutual Sports Centre. All residences have access control, lounges and television rooms, intercom systems, call boxes and parking spaces. All students are accommodated in single rooms. All residences are self-catering while a cafeteria facility is available for students. Limited accommodation for postgraduate students is offered at Scully House and Postgraduate House.

UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL (UKZN) STRUCTURE OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS
• Degree or Diploma programmes are offered within Colleges.
• The Head of College is the Dean, assisted by Heads of Schools and administrative staff .
• A College consists of Schools corresponding to different disciplines (Biology, History, Public Law, Sociology, etc.) Each School has a head, lecturers and administrative staff.
• When you are enrolled in a module which is taught by a number of lecturers, determine who the Module Organiser is. Tutorials may be conducted by other members of the department or by graduate assistants.
Who to go to for what
• You will be told during Orientation Week about the way your College functions.
• Registration documents must be approved by the Dean. This also applies if you want to de-register and register for another module by the due date. Academic Coordinators will advise you if you have enquiries about your academic choices or progress. For some problems, you may need to see the Module Organiser.
• For bigger personal problems, the College Student Counsellors are available.
Course choices
• Each College has different rules. Rules are found in your College Handbook and on the website (www.ukzn.ac.za/handbooks).
• Advice about module choices is given out during Orientation Week.
• Some professional degrees have fixed module combinations. In Humanities, there are wide combination choices depending on the timetable. Also, pay attention to prerequisites and compulsory co-requisite modules.

UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL (UKZN) FACILITIES
University Of Kwazulu-Natal (Ukzn) Information & Communication Technology
The Information Technology and Communications Division (ITCD) maintains a highly sophisticated data network and places a strong emphasis on facilities for students. All students have access to the network through PC labs, many of which are open 24 hours a day.
All labs have laser printing facilities and consultants are on duty to assist students. Available software includes the standard office suites from scanning, colour printing and Linux lab, Microsoft, as well as more specialised academic software packages such as Mathematica and SPSS. All students receive an e-mail address and have access to the Internet. Expert consultancy in advanced statistical and mathematical software packages is also available to postgraduates.

UKZN LIBRARIES
The five campuses have excellent library collections. Qualified subject librarians provide general reference and instructional services to students, staff and the wider community. The libraries are fully computerized and operate in a networked environment that provides access to the computerized catalogs and a range of local, national and international databases.
