South African Nursing Council


The South African Nursing Council is the body entrusted to set and maintain standards of nursing education and practice in the Republic of South Africa.  It is an autonomous, financially independent, statutory body, initially established by the Nursing Act, 1944 (Act No. 45 of 1944), and currently operating under the Nursing Act, 2005 (Act No. 33 of 2005).


Registration of Foreign Nurses and/or Foreign Qualifications with the South African Nursing Council

The South African Nursing Council has published guidelines for persons wishing to register foreign qualifications with the Council.

South African Nursing Council Statistics

The South African Nursing Council statistics fall into 2 broad categories.


These are statistics which show either –

The figures at the end of a particular calendar year; or
The number (count) of items over the period of a particular calendar year.


Time Series Statistics

These are statistics which show –

The changing figures from year to year over a period of up to 10 years.

Any nurse or midwife who intends resuming practicing and who is not currently on the register must first apply for restoration to the register. A person may have been removed for one of the following reasons:

Removed for non-payment of the annual licensing fee;
Removed at own request (when no longer practising);
Removed in execution of the sentence following a professional conduct hearing;
Removed administratively for failure to notify the Council of your correct address;
Removed on expiry of a limited registration; or
Removed because Council has been informed that the person is deceased.
